What is Counselling?
There are several approaches that a Counsellor can be trained in and use while working with you. Person Centred, Cognitive Behavioural Therapy (CBT). and Solution Focussed are some of the approaches also known as modalities. Some Counsellors believe that there is not just one therapeutic approach and use several to work integrative.
The different ways you can access counselling
Counselling is becoming far more accessible and the traditional face-to-face method might not suit everyone. There are several other options although not all counsellors will offer them. There is face-to-face, online, via telephone or in your own home. Counselling can be accessed either independently, in groups, as a couple or as a family and again is specific to each Counsellor.
Most counselling sessions would take place at an agreed location, time and day and the session will usually last around 50 minutes. How often you access the sessions or how many appointments you have will be agreed between you and your counsellor and will depend on your individual circumstances.
What happens in the first session?
In your first session, the counsellor will want to be open with you about the levels of confidentiality and what you can expect. They will want you to fully understand the therapeutic relationship and the boundaries within it. Together you will make an agreement of working together and this is known as a contract. Other things included in the contract might be the frequency of sessions, fees, and any communication outside the sessions.
The relationship
The Counsellor will welcome you to the session and help you to understand that the environment is a space for you to explore your thoughts, feelings or behaviours, and they will listen to you without judgement. Clients can access counselling for one or several reasons. A few examples include:
- Past and present life events
- Your thoughts, feelings and behaviour
- Relationships
- Change, endings and loss
- Situations you find difficult
The outcome
You will have agreed to work with your Counsellor and they will have conveyed their desire to work with you. They will also clarify that counselling does not offer any guaranteed outcomes however, counselling is perceived to be generally positive.
